ERPNext UAE VAT setup means configuring 5% VAT tax templates, zero-rated and exempt items, the emirate on each sales invoice, reverse charge on imports and the UAE VAT Settings, so ERPNext's built-in UAE VAT 201 report matches your return. For UAE corporate tax, ERPNext doesn't file the return, but a clean chart of accounts, entity setup and expense tagging give your tax adviser reliable numbers.
Who this is for: finance managers, accountants and owners of UAE trading, distribution, services and manufacturing businesses in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah using ERPNext or moving to it. Also relevant for GCC groups with entities in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain or Oman.
Key takeaways
- UAE VAT is 5%. Registration is mandatory above AED 375,000 of taxable supplies and imports, and voluntary above AED 187,500.
- ERPNext has UAE-specific fields and a UAE VAT 201 report built in: emirate, zero-rated, exempt, tourist refunds and reverse charge.
- From 1 January 2026, VAT amendments removed self-invoicing under reverse charge and set a five-year limit on reclaiming excess VAT.
- Corporate tax is 9% on taxable income above AED 375,000. Small Business Relief (revenue up to AED 3 million) now runs to tax periods ending by 31 December 2029.
- CT returns are due within 9 months of the end of the tax period. ERPNext's job is clean, entity-wise books.

UAE VAT basics you need before configuring ERPNext
These are the official rules, as published by the Federal Tax Authority (FTA) and Ministry of Finance, as of October 2026:
| Rule | What it means |
|---|---|
| Standard rate | 5% |
| Mandatory registration | Taxable supplies and imports above AED 375,000 in the last 12 months, or expected in the next 30 days |
| Voluntary registration | Taxable supplies, imports or expenses above AED 187,500 |
| VAT return and payment | Due by the 28th day after the end of each tax period |
| Return form | VAT 201, filed on EmaraTax |
Check the FTA website for the current rules before you file.
What changed for UAE VAT in 2026
Federal Decree-Law No. 16 of 2025 took effect on 1 January 2026. The changes that matter for your ERPNext setup:
- No self-invoices under reverse charge. You no longer issue a self-invoice for reverse-charge supplies, but you must keep the supporting documents.
- Five-year limit on excess VAT refunds. Claim or use excess recoverable VAT within five years, or the right expires.
- Input tax can be denied if the FTA finds a supply was part of a tax-evasion arrangement, so supplier checks matter more.
ERPNext UAE VAT setup: step by step
Step 1: Company, address and TRN
Create the company with United Arab Emirates as the country and AED as the currency. Add the company's Tax Registration Number (TRN) and a company address with the correct emirate. ERPNext copies the emirate from the company address to each Sales Invoice's VAT Emirate field, and you can change it per invoice.
Step 2: VAT accounts
Create (or check) separate ledgers under Duties and Taxes, for example:
- VAT 5% output (sales)
- VAT 5% input (purchases, recoverable)
- VAT on reverse charge (output and input sides)
Keeping these separate makes the VAT 201 report and your audit trail much easier. Our chart of accounts guide explains how to structure them.
Step 3: Tax templates
- Sales Taxes and Charges Template: "UAE VAT 5%" pointing to the output account.
- Purchase Taxes and Charges Template: "UAE VAT 5%" pointing to the input account.
- Item Tax Templates: for zero-rated and exempt items, so the right rate applies line by line.
Step 4: Mark zero-rated and exempt items
On each Item, tick Is Zero Rated (for example, qualifying exports) or Is Exempt where it applies. The VAT 201 report uses these flags.
Get your tax adviser to confirm the classification. The software only applies what you set.
Step 5: Reverse charge on purchases
On Purchase Invoices for imported services or goods under reverse charge, set Reverse Charge Applicable to "Y". ERPNext zeroes the tax on the invoice and posts the reverse-charge entries.
Use Recoverable Reverse Charge (Percentage) for the share you can reclaim. Since 1 January 2026 you don't need a self-invoice, but attach the supplier's invoice and supporting documents to the ERPNext record.
Step 6: Recoverable expenses and tourist refunds
- Recoverable Standard Rated Expense on Purchase Invoices records the input VAT you can recover.
- Refund Provided to Tourists on Sales Invoices records VAT refunded under the tourist scheme, for retailers in it.
Step 7: UAE VAT Settings
Open UAE VAT Settings and select all your VAT accounts. If an account is missing here, the VAT 201 report will understate your figures.
Step 8: Tax invoice print format
Your tax invoice should show "Tax Invoice", your TRN and the customer's TRN where they're registered, and VAT shown in AED if you invoice in another currency. Build a print format with these fields, in English and Arabic if your customers need both. See how to customise print formats in ERPNext.

Running the UAE VAT 201 report in ERPNext
Go to Accounting → Value-Added Tax (VAT UAE) → UAE VAT 201, or search "UAE VAT 201". Choose the company and the tax period, then print or export.
Before you trust the numbers, check three things:
- The emirate is right on the company address and each sales invoice.
- Zero-rated and exempt items are flagged in the item master.
- Every VAT account is selected in UAE VAT Settings.
Then reconcile the report against your VAT ledgers. Any difference usually points to a manual Journal Entry posted to a VAT account, or an invoice without the right template.
| ERPNext source | Feeds the VAT 201 return for |
|---|---|
| Sales Invoices with VAT Emirate | Standard-rated supplies, by emirate |
| Refund Provided to Tourists | Tourist refund adjustment |
| Items flagged Is Zero Rated / Is Exempt | Zero-rated and exempt supplies |
| Purchase Invoices with Reverse Charge Applicable | Reverse-charge supplies and recoverable tax |
| Recoverable Standard Rated Expense | Input VAT on standard-rated expenses |
UAE corporate tax: what ERPNext should do for you
Corporate tax applies to financial years starting on or after 1 June 2023. The key rules, from the Ministry of Finance:
| Rule | What it means |
|---|---|
| Rate | 0% on taxable income up to AED 375,000, 9% above |
| Registration | All taxable persons, including free zone persons, must register |
| Return and payment | Within 9 months of the end of the tax period |
| Qualifying Free Zone Persons | 0% on qualifying income, if the conditions are met |
| Small Business Relief | Revenue up to AED 3 million; extended to tax periods ending by 31 December 2029 |
ERPNext doesn't prepare the CT return. But taxable income starts from your accounting profit, so the books must be clean. Here's what to set up:
- One company per legal entity. Separate companies (and free zone entities) in ERPNext make entity-wise profit clear. See ERPNext financial consolidation for multi-company businesses.
- Fiscal year matching your tax period. Set it to your financial year and close the year properly.
- Expense accounts for adjustments. Keep accounts that need tax adjustments separate, such as client entertainment, fines and penalties, and donations, so your adviser can find them fast.
- Related-party tagging. Mark related-party customers and suppliers so the transactions are easy to list.
- Cost centres and dimensions by branch or business line, for management reporting and any qualifying-income analysis.
- Audit trail. Use ERPNext's document history and avoid editing posted entries. Read how ERPNext keeps audit-ready data.
Your tax adviser then makes the adjustments and files the return on EmaraTax.
Get ready for UAE e-invoicing too
UAE e-invoicing becomes mandatory from 1 January 2027 for businesses with revenue of AED 50 million or more, and from 1 July 2027 for others in scope. Clean VAT setup is the foundation: TRNs, emirates and item tax templates all feed the e-invoice. Read our UAE e-invoicing ERPNext checklist.
Beyond the UAE: Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman
ERPNext can run several GCC companies in one system, each with its own currency, chart of accounts and tax templates. Saudi Arabia (Riyadh, Jeddah) has its own VAT rules and ZATCA e-invoicing.
Read our ERPNext ZATCA Phase 2 guide. We also support ERPNext users in Qatar (Doha), Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman (Muscat), and we configure each country from its own official rules.

Frequently asked questions
Does ERPNext support UAE VAT?
Yes. ERPNext includes UAE-specific fields and a built-in UAE VAT 201 report.
You set the emirate on addresses and sales invoices, flag zero-rated and exempt items, record reverse charge and recoverable expenses, and select your VAT accounts in UAE VAT Settings. The report then summarises your figures for the return.
How do I generate the UAE VAT 201 report in ERPNext?
Go to Accounting, then Value-Added Tax (VAT UAE), then UAE VAT 201, or search "UAE VAT 201". Choose the company and period. Check that emirates are correct, zero-rated and exempt items are flagged, and all VAT accounts are in UAE VAT Settings, then reconcile the report against your VAT ledgers.
What is the VAT registration threshold in the UAE?
Registration is mandatory when taxable supplies and imports exceed AED 375,000 in the last 12 months, or are expected to in the next 30 days. You can register voluntarily above AED 187,500 of taxable supplies, imports or expenses. The standard VAT rate is 5%.
How does reverse charge work in ERPNext for UAE VAT?
On the Purchase Invoice, set Reverse Charge Applicable to "Y". ERPNext zeroes the tax on the invoice and posts the reverse-charge entries, and you can set a recoverable percentage. Since 1 January 2026, UAE businesses no longer issue self-invoices for reverse charge but must keep supporting documents.
Can ERPNext calculate UAE corporate tax?
Not the return itself. ERPNext gives you clean, entity-wise profit and loss, which is the starting point for taxable income.
Keep separate accounts for items needing tax adjustments, tag related parties, and match the fiscal year to your tax period. Your tax adviser then computes and files on EmaraTax.
Who qualifies for Small Business Relief in UAE corporate tax?
UAE-resident taxable persons with revenue of AED 3 million or less can elect Small Business Relief, subject to conditions. In August 2026, the Ministry of Finance extended it to tax periods ending on or before 31 December 2029. Check eligibility with your tax adviser before electing it.
