Best ERP for Small Business in India (2026): 6 Options

Best ERP software for small business in India in 2026 compared

If you search for the best ERP for a small business in India, you will find lists written by the vendors themselves, each ranking its own product first. This guide takes a different approach. We implement ERPNext at Nexeves, so we have a bias, and we say so up front. What we can offer is a clear way to choose, a fair description of six common options, and the questions that matter more than any ranking.

The right ERP for a ten-person trading firm in Kozhikode is not the right one for a 200-person factory in Coimbatore. So instead of naming one winner, we explain who each option suits and where it is weak. Prices change often and depend on users, modules and region, so we do not quote any. Ask each vendor for a written, itemised quote.

If you are still deciding whether you need an ERP at all, start with our posts on seven signs your spreadsheets are costing you money and when is the right time to move to ERPNext.

Key takeaways

  • Accounting software and ERP are different tools. Tally Prime and Zoho Books start from accounting. ERPNext, Odoo, SAP Business One and Business Central start from a full business process.
  • India compliance is the first filter: GST, e-invoicing (mandatory above Rs 5 crore turnover), e-way bills and TDS must work out of the box or through a maintained add-on.
  • Compare five-year cost, not the first-year price. Implementation, customisation, hosting, support and upgrades often outweigh the licence.
  • Never choose without a demo on your own data. A two-week pilot with real invoices will teach you more than any brochure.

ERP or accounting software: which do you need?

Many small businesses start with accounting software and are well served for years. The signs that you have outgrown it are practical: stock is wrong, sales and purchase teams work in separate sheets, there is no approval flow, you manage projects or production on the side, or the owner cannot see branch results without asking three people. At that point you need one system for operations, with accounting as one part of it.

If your main need is Look first at
Books, GST filing, a simple stock register Accounting-first tools: Tally Prime, Zoho Books
Sales, purchase, stock, accounts and approvals in one place A full ERP: ERPNext, Odoo, SAP Business One, Business Central
Manufacturing with BOM, work orders and costing A full ERP with a manufacturing module and a partner who has done it before
Projects, timesheets and billing A full ERP with project accounting, or a specialist tool linked to accounts

The India filter: what must work from day one

  • GST: correct tax on intra-state and inter-state sales, reverse charge, GSTR-ready reports and input credit tracking.
  • E-invoicing and e-way bills: e-invoicing is mandatory for GST-registered businesses whose aggregate turnover exceeded Rs 5 crore in any year since 2017-18, per the GST e-invoice portal. Many small businesses are below that level today and growing towards it, so choose a system that will not need replacing at the threshold.
  • TDS: deduction on supplier invoices and reports for returns. From 1 April 2026 the section numbers changed under the Income-tax Act, 2025, so check that the vendor has updated. See our guide to TDS setup in ERPNext as an example of what to ask.
  • Rupee formats, Indian numbering and regional language needs on documents and reports.
  • Your CA's comfort. Ask your accountant what exports and reports they need. This single question decides more projects than any feature list.

Six ERP options for Indian small businesses

These are descriptions of fit, based on how each product is publicly positioned and licensed. Features change, so verify details with each vendor before you decide.

1. Tally Prime

Best for: traders and small firms whose main need is accounting, GST and inventory, and whose accountant already lives in Tally. It accepts data from other software over XML, which is how integrations work (see our ERPNext and Tally integration guide). Watch out for: it is built around accounting and inventory, so CRM, projects, HR, manufacturing and approval workflows are normally handled by other tools. Our ERPNext vs Tally Prime post explains when switching makes sense.

2. Zoho Books (and the wider Zoho family)

Best for: small and growing businesses that want cloud accounting with GST and are happy to add other Zoho apps for CRM, inventory and more. Watch out for: as you add modules, you manage several subscriptions and connections, and deep manufacturing or custom workflows may need extra tools. See ERPNext vs Zoho Books.

3. ERPNext

Best for: small and mid-sized businesses that want a single open-source ERP covering accounts, stock, sales, purchase, manufacturing, projects, HR and CRM, with the freedom to customise. ERPNext is licensed under the GNU GPL-3.0 and Frappe states that it has no feature-locked paid edition. Indian compliance comes through the India Compliance app. Frappe does not implement ERPNext itself and works through certified partners, so the quality of your partner matters a lot. Watch out for: the software is free but implementation, hosting and support are not, and flexible software needs discipline so it does not become over-customised. See our guides on ERPNext implementation cost in India and hosting cost.

4. Odoo

Best for: businesses that like Odoo's app-by-app approach and its polished interface. Odoo Community is open source under LGPL-3.0, while Odoo Enterprise is proprietary and needs a subscription. Watch out for: check which India features, such as GST e-invoicing and e-way bill, are in the edition you are quoted, and how per-user pricing scales. Our ERPNext vs Odoo (2026) comparison goes deeper.

5. SAP Business One

Best for: small and midsize companies that want an established SAP product and are comfortable with a partner-led project. Watch out for: licence, implementation and add-on costs can be higher than open-source options, and customisation usually goes through the partner. See ERPNext vs SAP Business One.

6. Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central

Best for: companies already invested in Microsoft tools such as Microsoft 365 and Power BI, who want a cloud ERP sold and supported through partners. Watch out for: the total cost grows with users and add-ons, and India-specific compliance depends on the localisation your partner provides. See ERPNext vs Dynamics 365.

Which type of business fits which option?

This is our judgement from implementation work, not a ranking. Test it against your own situation.

Business type Often a good fit Why
Small trader with a strong CA relationship Tally Prime, or ERPNext with Tally sync during transition Accounting and stock come first, and the CA keeps a familiar tool
Growing trader or distributor with several users and branches ERPNext, Odoo, Business Central Needs stock, approvals, price lists and branch reports in one place
Small manufacturer ERPNext, Odoo, SAP Business One Needs BOM, work orders, subcontracting and costing, plus a partner who understands production
Service firm with projects and timesheets ERPNext, Zoho family, Business Central Needs project billing and utilisation reports
Retail shop or small chain ERPNext with POS, or a dedicated POS linked to accounts Needs fast billing, offline mode and stock control

The five-year cost checklist

Whichever product you pick, ask each vendor or partner to quote these lines in writing, for five years:

  • Licence or subscription, per user, per module and per company.
  • Implementation: requirement study, configuration, data migration, training and go-live support.
  • Customisation: what is included, what is extra, and who owns the code.
  • Hosting and backups, including who is responsible for security and uptime.
  • Annual support or maintenance, and the response times you get.
  • Upgrades: how major versions are handled and billed.
  • Exit cost: how you get your data out in a usable form if you leave.

Our posts on ERP implementation cost and support and AMC plans explain what each line usually covers.

How to shortlist in two weeks

  1. Write down 10 must-haves from your daily work, such as "invoice with GST and e-way bill in two minutes" or "branch-wise stock at a glance".
  2. List your reports: the five reports the owner and CA look at every month.
  3. Pick two or three options from the list above, based on fit and not on brand.
  4. Run the same demo script with each: one sale, one purchase, one stock transfer, one return, one payment, and the month-end reports. Use your own item names and a real customer.
  5. Involve your CA in the accounting and GST part.
  6. Ask for references from two businesses of your size and trade, and call them.
  7. Compare the five-year cost sheets and the project plans, not only the headline price.

Our guide to evaluating ERPNext with a demo or free trial includes a ready demo script. And to judge returns, see our post on building an ERP business case.

Common mistakes when choosing an ERP

  • Choosing on per-user price alone. A cheap licence with an expensive, slow implementation is not cheap.
  • Letting the vendor demo their data. Insist on your process and your documents.
  • Buying for the future you imagine. Buy for the next three years of real operations, with a path to grow.
  • Ignoring the people side. Our post on what businesses get wrong about implementations shows how adoption, not software, decides most failures.
  • Skipping data cleanup. Duplicate customers and inconsistent item names move straight into the new system.

Where ERPNext is a poor fit

We would rather lose a project than win a bad one. ERPNext may not be right if you only need basic accounting and your CA will not use anything but Tally, if you have no one to own the system internally and no partner you trust, or if you need a very specific industry package that another vendor already sells with deep local support. Our ERPNext for startups post is equally candid.

How Nexeves helps you choose

We run a short discovery call, map your must-haves to two or three realistic options, and tell you plainly what each will cost and demand from your team. If ERPNext is the match, see our ERPNext implementation services.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best ERP for a small business in India?

There is no single best option. Tally Prime and Zoho Books suit accounting-led businesses. ERPNext, Odoo, SAP Business One and Dynamics 365 Business Central suit businesses that need stock, sales, purchase and approvals in one system. Choose by fit, compliance and five-year cost.

Is there a free ERP for small businesses in India?

ERPNext is free and open-source under the GPL-3.0 licence, and Odoo Community is open source under LGPL-3.0. You still pay for hosting, implementation, training and support, so compare total cost.

Do small businesses need e-invoicing?

E-invoicing is mandatory for GST-registered businesses whose aggregate turnover exceeded Rs 5 crore in any year since 2017-18, according to the GST e-invoice portal. Smaller businesses can choose a system that supports it before they reach the limit.

Should I choose accounting software or an ERP?

Choose accounting software if books, GST and a simple stock register are enough. Choose an ERP when stock, sales, purchase, approvals, production or projects need to work together.

How long does it take to choose an ERP?

A focused shortlist, demo and reference process takes about two weeks. Rushing the choice usually costs more than the extra days.

Can I run Tally and an ERP together?

Yes, for a transition period. A one-way sync from the ERP to Tally is possible over XML, but we advise treating it as a bridge and planning to retire the double entry.
